About

In a world where bold, experimental voices are often underfunded, the Herb Alpert Award is a powerful act of recognition. It offers not just financial support, but validation and visibility—often at a pivotal moment in an artist’s career.

The Award was established in 1994 by legendary musician and philanthropist Herb Alpert and the Herb Alpert Foundation. From its inception, the goal has been clear: to support artists who push boundaries and defy convention.

Administered by CalArts for more than three decades, the program concluded in 2025. The collaboration created a sustained exchange between established artists and emerging voices and left an ongoing record of artistic work, dialogue, and public engagement.
